Research shows the counselor and client alliance is the number one indicator of whether or not the counseling journey will be successful for a client. Sometimes, counselors may struggle to develop a strong alliance due to discomfort with effective relationship-building strategies such as confrontation, the use of humor, touch, broaching and self-disclosure. Without the incorporation of these techniques, clients often feel unchallenged and grow restless in the counseling process. This program aims to support mental health professionals in becoming comfortable with these techniques while continuing to maintain ethical considerations.
Upon completion, participants will:
Have an understanding of the basic ethical building blocks for a therapeutic alliance.
Assess and create opportunities for boundary-setting and checking in with clients throughout the therapeutic relationship
Understand the common complaints clients have for leaving/terminating therapy.
Understand the common traits of “good therapists”.
Learn, understand, and implement the commonly avoided or mishandled strategies that when done well can lead to successful therapeutic alliances: Broaching/ Humor/ Self-Disclosure/ Touch
